I saw a couple signs along NC12 saying this, with a list of places I couldn't quite catch all of. Quarterdeck was included.

What's this all about? I'm dying to know!

We did see quite a few little beach kitties straying around in our neighborhood on Marlin Ct., looked like one Mama cat and several smaller ones.

Dare County Board Of Commissioners and Hatterasman Homeowners Association,

The cats on Hatteras Island had no control over how they got there or how they are forced to live. They are protected by the animal cruelty laws that you will not enforce. The people who care for these cats that you have abandoned are doing a community service and should be supported in every way possible. The torchering and killing of these cats in any way is unacceptable especially since the care takers have offered an alternative that keeps them alive.Your disregard for these animals shows your prejudice and discrimination for them. For that you are being boycotted by the signees until which time you treat ALL animals with the right to their lives.

Wow that is pretty ****ty and sad if all that is true. If people are really "torturing" and making sport of killing the cats, then catch-and-release doesn't really do much good right away, but it would eventually thin out a population very much.

Also, for what it's worth, these petitions read very tin-foil hat-esque, so perhaps the initiative would be better received with a little finesse in the write ups, and signs that weren't scrawled in tiny handwriting..

I'm sure there's more to this story. From the links it looks like one person in a battle with a few others.

Boycott Hatteras Island and hired cat killers? Yes that sounds like something a reasonable person would say. I've seen very few strays during my times on the island.

Speaking of cat, is there a Chinese restaurant on the Island, or up north?

We worked with a catch, neuter and vaccinate organization inSouthern Shotes a couple of years ago. We trapped one of the strays and took her to Martin's Point vet where they spayed her and gave her a rabies shot. Cost was $80.00. She came back here in Duck along with a black cat that had already been taken care of.

The vet notches one ear after being taken care of.

We plan to work with this organization more in the future. We have already purchased our own humain traps.

Carolina Calm I applaud you for the cats! I have 8 homeless cats that I feed and give winter shelter. PETA had fixed them and returned to neighborhood (with ear clip). Live in my mom and dads home where I was raised and when they passed and I moved in these poor cats could not help they were homeless. They harm nothing here and being alone give me company when I work in yard. I love all animals and they deserve some help when homeless especially if no danger to anyone. Not afraid of them cause they keep their distance from me. Been 3 years now and loving it!!
Cheers to your kind heart!!!

We a pretty sure a coyote is prowling around our home. They have been sighted at the Wright Brothers Memorial. I'm borrowing a trail camera from a friend to confirm it. If it is a coyote the outside cats are going to disappear.

I'm kind of surprised that the feral cats aren't more of an issue considering the importance various groups put on protecting the shore birds and turtles. The feral cats are feeding on the locals so one would suspect getting rid of the cats would be part of the protect the birds and turtles mantra.

I’ve been told this gentleman goes around putting out food for feral cats under various houses in Frisco. He does this at 1-2am. Not surprisingly, this has caused many calls to the sheriffs office. One some occasions, he’s been aggressive with people who've confronted him.

Many local owners have given notice that he is not welcome on their property. That means that if he goes on their property to feed feral cats he could be charged with trespassing. Since the owners are not letting him on their property to feed cats, in this gentleman’s opinion they are cat haters.

If this is this case, I don't understand how he's still doing it. Where I'm from, that behavior would be corrected pretty quickly, no sheriff's call needed.

Yeah, yeah, I get that it's not the legally "correct" thing to do, but I don't care. If I find someone under my house at 1-2am, they are going to wish the sheriff was there...I'm very protective of my family and that would be a clear threat.

Obviously I don't know the ins and outs of the local stuff but this sounds pretty likely.. combined with a little tin-foil tendency and time to brew, makes for a great conspiracy.

Throwing cats in the air to shoot them? Right there in Frisco? Seems legit. smiley with shades

I pay taxes to those who I expect to stop this behavior. I'm with J4yDubs. Allowing this kind of crap to go on from an individual is how I believe we end up with some nutcase taking revenge on groups of people.

I guess I'll never understand why humans feel the need to kill off unwanted domesticated animals. Especially when humans dumped those unwanted domesticated animals. Humans are superior. Let's flex our muscle please. We certainly live in a time of zero tolerance for many many things (maybe being a bit dramatic there). I get that they are a nuisance but it totally irks me because these cats started off as family pets. Some guy out in the middle of the night feeding them? There has to be a safer way. Dangerous for him, homeowners, or renters. If I were renting and had to take one of the pups out at night and some guy was under the house, would scare me to death and we'd likely wake up the neighborhood.

I've fed two cats for over 15 months now. In my neighborhood, people dump cats all the time. I get pissed off at the humans, not the helpless animals. I have a shelter for winter. My goal is to trap these two I have been feeding. I have a rescue that will take them. They are not feral. I just hate the thought of people killing helpless animals, nuisance or not.

A few years back we had a guy feeding cats under our house in Salvo while we were away. When we arrived,he still had the guts to continue to do it while we left during the day for the beach. We had cat cr_p all over our lower deck and entrance deck. Completely unacceptable...

We found out who it was and after a "chat", it stopped immediately.

I had problems with a feral cat colony where I used to live in Indiana, Ferals are not like poor kitty who escaped someones house and needs rescued. These are wild cats.

I had a really great kitty myself then who spent most of the night at the patio door nose to nose growling at his wild counterparts. This particular feral cat colony killed off all the rabbits and song birds that tried to nest in my yard. I'd walk out on the patio on a Saturday morning to have my coffee and it looked like a battlefield out there - with muddy footprints, blood and rabbit fur everywhere. And if you've never been jarred awake at 2am by a cat fight right outside your bedroom window you just have't lived...lol

I wound up getting a loaner live trap from one of the local animal shelters. After 12 cats they wouldn't take anymore but that seemed to solve the problem for me.

Yes, that's the sad truth to all this. They are wild. It all started with pet cats being dumped and then a few liters later, the feral line begins.

The feral cat at our beach house is kitten sized, and has been there for at least 8 years. She has never been part of a colony as far as I can tell. She has been neutered for a long time. She lives in the bushes between the house and the dunes and can catch mice, birds, ghost crabs and snakes.

She used to keep her distance. However, over the years guests would see her and feed her; I would find pans and food. So they adopted her, and she adopted them. Now she runs things. She is a true survivor - one of those persevering types.

10 years ago we adopted a cat from one of the groups on the beach. We don't think she was feral. She certainly was not socialized and it has taken until now for her to become a lap-cat. When strangers come here she disappears until they leave. She has never been outside since we adopted her and she has never shown a desire to go outside.
