Hatteras Island Vacation Report

We came down Sunday for our annual Hatteras Island vacation! The trip down was nice with clear blue skies. The temperature was 90 until we got to the Alligator Bridge then it dropped to 83! Nice. It's been nice ever since. A love that cool ocean breeze! We check in about 3:30. We always play a game-what do you thing the owner has done to the place? So we drive up and WOW- the lift is gone, all new fencing, new under house storage door, new washer and dryer. Hurricane Mathew last fall did a number on this place. And the three vacant lots next door all ALL NO LONGER VACANT! Neighbors to the right, neighbors to the left. The quiet little cul de sac is now full! After unpacking we were too tired to cook here so we headed out for supper. Most all the restaurants were closed except Roccos in Hatteras. So we ate there. It was really good. A quick trip to the store and back to the cottage. This morning we woke up to clear blue skies and a nice breeze. Cooked breakfast at the cottage and then spent the day here enjoying the cottage, deck, views and the sound. Took a long walk, read, got some sun, kayaked a little and a short bike ride. Then headed to Buxton for a ORV permit. Ate at The Captains Table then more grocery shopping. At Connors we ran into Donna who used to run the ice cream and putt putt golf place in Buxton! Had not seen her in years! We have seen the ISS fly over both nights. The moon rising last night was beautiful. A quiet night at home. Tomorrow we plan to to to Ramp 49 for some beach time. I love my HI vacation Sun Big grin

RE: Hatteras Island Vacation Report

We join the party Thursday afternoon.

Hoping the timeline goes something like this:

Frisco Beach to say hi to old pier, a new beer and the Atlantic around 2:00
Breakwater Inn around 3:00
Pool by 3:05
Oden's Dock around 4:00
Risky Business steamed shrimp, beer, sunset and catchin up with some old friends round out the night.

Anything we can do on travel day is a bonus. The week officially begins Saturday when we check into the rental home. Hopefully we'll see you guys around the village.

RE: Hatteras Island Vacation Report

We woke up this morning to blue skies again. Ate breakfast at the cottage-scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and the sweetest cantaloupe ever! Went for a walk then
packed up the truck and headed to ramp 49. It was perfect!. Light to moderate winds, nice surf. Not many people out there. Enjoyed a few hours on the beach and in
the water. The water is at first cold but then you get used to it and it feels wonderful!. I had heard about the island at Cape Point so we left Ramp 49 headed north, took
ramp 47 and rode the back beach road to Ramp 44. Rode out to the point and COOL!. That island is huge. Not many people walking on it. There were some that had taken a SUP,a kayak and even a bodyboard and made it over to the island. It is way bigger than I thought. So tomorrow someway some how this chick is getting on that island!!!!

When we left the point we returned to the cottage for a quick cleanup. Then headed to Hatteras Village for the Hatteras Cancer BBQ at the civic center. We missed this last year but I made sure we were here the 2nd Tuesday in June this year to go to the BBQ this year. The food is so good-and you get a plate full! Then we went to Hatteras Landing for a little shopping. Had to also stop back in at the Scotch Bonnet for the Southern Comfort fudge! Chocolate on bottom, caramel and pecans then vanilla on top with caramel drizzled on top. The best flavor they have IMO!

Right now I am listening to the Wallops Island feed to see is they launch those colorful canisters. Will try to watch out over the ocean to the north. But they just announced another scrub tonight.

Tomorrow we plan to eat breakfast at Sonnys in Hatteras Village then go out to the point to get on that island and get some shells! Wish me luck. I feel brave and confident I can get out to it but tomorrow when I'm standing at the channel to cross I will be a nervous wreck Confused

The parking lot for the pier is still there. Just south of the Quarterdeck turn on Cape Hatteras Pier Dr. Parking is at the end of the road. Easy access to the beach.

Wednesday-Another beautiful day, a little windy but all sun and blue skies. Ate breakfast at Sonnys-love those omelets and the french toast ( and the coffee). Returned to cottage to talk about the rest of the day. OK, I didn't really chicken out about the island at Cape Point. Just decided to wait till tomorrow! Relaxing at Ramp 49 sounded so much better! Still not many people on the island. A lot of rentals in this area normally with renters are empty. After a few hours at ramp 49 we came back to clean up. Went back to the Captain's Table for supper. Then went to get some pictures of the beach nourishment project in Buxton. Dredges and equipment there but no sand pumping yet. Will go back in a day or so to get better pictures. Then we headed back out to ramp 44 and the point. To plan our island adventure tomorrow-the best place to cross, the best time (high tide vs low tide). Saw two guys swim across-looked so easy but NOT ME! A stop at Conners for breakfast food for in AM here before WE GO TO THE ISLAND! A quiet night at the cottage going thru the pictures I took. Across the sound there is a large bank of clouds but I think the rain will stay south of us tonight. I love my wildlife pictures-so neat to see that just riding on the lighthouse road!

Heading back to the cottage saw this horse and buggy leaving the lighthouse area!
