BUTTER ROAST.

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

Question.... Do you all use the crockpot liners? I swear by them. Real easy clean up. Oh yeah, I can't spin my lid..... It's an oval one. Wink smiley

i'm quite fond of spinning my lid! Heh. Whistle

Haven't tried that recipe yet but it looks tasty!

Me Honey adapted her mom's meatloaf recipe to cook in our crockpot - BEST i've ever had!

We seldom used ours but recently found this great cookbook and i'm anxious to use the crockpot more often.

Okay, now you have to post the meatloaf recipe! Meatloaf is one of my favorites!

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

Ok..... Tonight we had venison in the crockpot. I used Liptons Onion Soup/Dip mix and Ranch Mix. Couldn't find the other. WV is light years behind everyone else.
At any rate.... It was delicious. I will add lots of veggies to the leftovers and make soup tomorrow.
Oh yes...... I would like to have the meatloaf recipe for the crockpot too. Love cooking in it.

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

I'm using salted butter.

I don't even buy salted butter. If you want it salty, put some salt in it. Try a taste of salted and one of unsalted. You'll find the unsalted has a much fresher flavor.

OK, I'm sticking my neck out here...my roast was dry. It was chewy. It had great flavor though. I used a rump roast, not chuck and it was a 3lb roast. We added mushrooms at the end but not sour cream or the wine I originally discussed.
Anyone else have this? It was edible but my son didn't finish his helping. What went wrong?

Rump roast has just about no marbling, and if it wasn't at least Choice, then that's even worse. Chuck is the correct cut for pot roast, and don't cut any fat off before cooking!

Try the chuck next time, and you'll see a huge difference...make sure it's Choice and NOT Select!

What's the deal about lifting the lid on the crockpot? I use mine all the time and lift the lid to stir it around, no problems ever.

This particular recipe is the crock pot version to a similar recipe from before crock pots. In that recipe you put the roast in heavy al foil and dumped a package of Lipton Onion Soup mix. Then you sealed it very tightly so no steam would escape. The reasoning is that you haven't added any liquid, and if you open it up, what little liquid that's naturally there will go away and you'll end up with drier meat and less sauce. Sort of the same idea as not lifting the lid when you're cooking rice.

I've found unsalted tastes like a big glob of fat and I get that the butter in that recipe is just to add fat but the thought of unsalted kinda turns my stomach. I hate it and only use it for baking. I'm not a big salt lover either. I bought a container of kosher and a container of seasalt over 3 years ago. both are still nearly full.

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

I put 5 lbs of butter in the crockpot, I added a pint of bourbon. It was damn tasty.

I only use unsalted bourbon

... Sick smiley ....

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

I used unsalted...we don't eat much salt for health reasons, took awhile to get used to how food really tastes, but now, when we go out to a restaurant, usually the food is too salty.

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

We had this tonight, although I used broth instead of butter. I made steamed cauliflower and made a cauliflower mash with some salt, pepper, garlic and some of the juices from the roast.
Pretty tasty!

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

OK roast is in.. seems so weird not to add any water, but I'm doing collards with tomotoes on the side and mashed taters. Let ya know tomorrowsmiley Then left overs with noodles tomorrow night. YUM can't wait.

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

I made this last Friday for dinner. While tasty, it is way tooooo rich for my stomach. I don't see why you could't use 1/2 the butter or even margarine. Something low fat for sure is needed.

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

The roast was wonderful!! Now on to the meatloaf recipe??????

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

Yes, where is the crockpot meatloaf recipe everyone keeps mentioning? smiley

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

Why would anyone want to make meatloaf in a crockpot?? Meatloaf is one of the easiest things to fix...only takes about an hour in the oven.....seems lit it would fall apart in a crockpot for all those hours. Am I wrong in thinking this?

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

Your right never thought about that with a meatloaf.

I acutally had some of the beef with noodles for breakfast at my desk Embaressed smiley

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

I made this last night. Everyone liked it. I've seen it elsewhere called a "Mississippi Pot Roast"

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

As far as lifting the lid when cooking, I never do. The manual that came with mine says you need to add 20 more minutes cooking time every time you lift the lid.

I love slow cooking in the crock pot. It is almost impossible to ruin a roast in it, and that is important to me. smiley

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

I came upon this post last week and decided to make this over the weekend w/a bottom round roast I had. I was amazed at the amount of liquid was generated in the crockpot from the roast. The meat was cooked perfectly and shredded up nicely. But DO NOT use salted butter. I did because it was what I had on hand and the juices wound up really salty. I am going to try again w/unsalted and maybe cut the seasoning packets in half to alleviate that.

Thanks for the recipe!!

I already make a great meatloaf the old fashioned way, but several posters have mentioned it, so I'd like to know how it compares.

RE: BUTTER ROAST.

I made the roast on Saturday. It was such a hit I had to make it again today. I am not usually a pot roast fan, but this was really good.
