I have seen a bobcat twice on the Alligator River Refuge, winter both times, about 3:30 pm both times, a year or more apart, and way off in the distance. Yay you seeing one close up!
I haven't seen a fox in Duck since 2015. Boy oh boy would I love that!!
Oh my gosh we saw so many the past two Septembers! We were on the OF end of Marlin roughly 200 ft from the beach access. (3rd house) We would see them at dusk/dark and the early morning hours. As I mentioned above one night I heard this horrible howling/cry. I honestly thought someone had hit a dog with a car, it was sounded like something was screaming in agony. And it kept going and going. My daughter and I walked to the end of our driveway to check the street, and the people across from us were also out. Now we were hearing the cries near us, and several responding cries in the distance. Suddenly a fox ran "screaming" out of the brush a few feet from us and across the street. We were all stunned.
It went on for several hours, numerous foxes calling out to one another, seemingly circling the area. I still dont know what they were doing. Hunting? mating? I googled it at the time and read that often the cries/calls/screams stem from territorial issues. I'll never forget it though. I am a city girl and I will admit those sounds scared the bejeezus out of me. Awful! It was dark and I admit I was spooked!
